
In fact, this year marked a number of significant anniversaries contributing to the miracle of Israel.
Exactly 120 years ago in August, the first Zionist Congress took place in Basel, Switzerland. There, a gathering of Jews, under the leadership of Theodor Herzl, decided to establish a Jewish State. Also in November, we saw the 70th anniversary of the UN General Assembly’s approval of Partition Plan 181, according to which the Holy Land was to be divided into separate Jewish and Arab states. While far from ideal, the Jews accepted the plan given that it afforded international recognition of the State of Israel. A few months later, on May 14, 1948, the Jewish State of Israel was declared independent. And, of course, in June of this year we marked 50 years since the Six Day War, when Israel reunited Jerusalem and liberated the Temple Mount.
