Between Memorial Day and Independence Day, a particularly sharp transition unfolds in Israel.

An entire country transitions within hours from the silence of remembering our fallen defenders; to the flags, music and celebration of Independence. This is a transition that is difficult to explain to someone who does not live here. How is it possible to move from mourning to joy like this? How is it possible to face loss – and immediately afterwards choose life? Within this tension, something profound is revealed about the human soul, about the spirit that sustains a people across generations, and about the invisible connection between pain and the continuation of life.

Memorial Day is not just a day of mourning.

It is a day when an entire people stops and agrees to confront the painful price they pay to be an independent people in their eternal land and to continue to exist, live and even maintain a routine of life, despite everything.
