Israel’s ambassador to the UN, Gilad Erdan, dramatically tore up a UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) report during a recent address to the General Assembly and proclaimed: “The voices of the victims of the terrible crimes against humanity that we have already seen in the first decades of this century cannot be heard over the obsession of the UNHRC with targeting Israel. The suffering of the victims of the greatest crimes goes unnoticed. Shame on you, shame on you, shame on you!”
Erdan made this statement after the UNHRC decided to open a permanent probe against Israel’s alleged human rights abuses in Gaza, the West Bank and within Israel proper. Israel is the only country that has been targeted in this manner by the UN Human Rights Council. The idea to tear up a report as an act of protest is not new. In 1975, former Ambassador to the UN Chaim Herzog famously tore up a document equating Zionism with racism in his speech to the UN General Assembly.
