Don’t trust your Navigation-App too much.

The first thing I do as I set off to work at 6 a.m. is turn on the GPS on my smartphone. I open Waze, the Israeli navigation app that usually saves me time by redirecting my route away from traffic jams and construction detours.

But the other day something went wrong. The virtual voice gently informed me that it would take 58 minutes to get to Jerusalem and instructed me to use Highway 443. Normally I would take the main Highway 1, which only takes 25 minutes to arrive in the capital, so I ignored the recommendation and continued along my normal route.

Waze went nuts trying to recalculate my destination, suggesting numerous garbled directions and travel times that grew longer and longer. I checked the digital map and recalled that a new tunnel cutting through the Judean Hills en route to Jerusalem was recently opened.
