The first thing I do as I set off to work at 6 a.m. is turn on the GPS on my smartphone. I open Waze, the Israeli navigation app that usually saves me time by redirecting my route away from traffic jams and construction detours.
But the other day something went wrong. The virtual voice gently informed me that it would take 58 minutes to get to Jerusalem and instructed me to use Highway 443. Normally I would take the main Highway 1, which only takes 25 minutes to arrive in the capital, so I ignored the recommendation and continued along my normal route.
