The city of Gaza was already a source of unrest in biblical times. The people of Israel suffered in the entire southern part of the country under the Philistines, who often only understood the language of violence. “Gaza” in the Hebrew Bible text is עַזָּה Aza, which means something like “strong, mighty, brave.” Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar may imagine he is descended from them, but the Philistines have nothing in common with today’s Palestinians. The foreign peoples living in the Gaza Strip seem to think so for some reason.
“But if you do not drive out the inhabitants of the land, those you allow to remain will become barbs in your eyes and thorns in your sides. They will give you trouble in the land where you will live” (Num. 33:55).
