The pictures from German cities look as though an entire generation has lost touch with reality – not out of malice, but because no one has prepared them for the world as it actually is. What I’m seeing these days is a deep chasm between two youth cultures: one growing up in the harsh reality of the Middle East, the other wrapped in the warm cotton wool of European illusions.
While Israel’s young people protect their homeland out of love, duty and responsibility, a part of German youth is holding up signs calling for a world that simply does not exist.
When peace has reigned in Europe for decades, who guarantees that the coming decades will be the same? And that is exactly where the problem begins – and the story that needs to be told.
“If politicians don’t listen to us, we’ll keep going,” a 16-year-old named Ruben O. told the German newspaper Tagesspiegel. Ruben himself absolutely does not want to join the Bundeswehr.
