Whether today or in biblical times, Israel’s covenants with other nations must not compromise her covenant with God.

When the Bible speaks of Israel making covenants with foreign peoples, God’s reaction is usually negative. This is often expressed in the prophets. God insists on unlimited trust on the part of His people, and Israel’s alliances with foreign kingdoms or peoples tend to evoke God’s disapproval.

Superpowers like America, Russia and China can be compared in some ways to Babylon, Assyria and Egypt in biblical times. How should one judge Israel’s alliances with superpowers such as the USA or China today? Recent peace treaties with Arab nations, such as the Abraham Accords, are called into question. They might be politically correct, but are they biblically correct?

No voices are heard today warning that these covenants are against God’s will. Not even the religious Jews object. On the contrary, they enjoy the open borders. and travel to the Persian Gulf states to celebrate their festivals in these countries.

  1. Disciple 1978 says:

Covenants are two ways. Muslims take a different approach to covenants than Israel or God’s people. Islam has a name for tactical covenants that can be broken once an advantage is gained. They broker agreements until they become strong enough to assert their dominance over the other party. None of us are in doubt that the Palestinians intend to overrule Israel when they become strong enough. Having the UN, EU and others batting for them only encourages them to string Israel along until the time is right. The PLO have broken the Oslo Accords numerous times. Stop wringing your hands, accept their decision and let the accord be broken.

  2. Vernon Ryan says:

The Palestinians made a covenant in 1964 with the Soviets to be a thorn in the side of the Israeli’s, and they work very hard to keep their covenant. Through deceit and multiple lies they also make other peoples take a stand with them and getting extremely rich at the same time.
The time of Israel’s enemies is short, a short period of time after the Ezekiel 38 battle, Israel’s enemies will no longer exist.
Draw near to the Lord, and He will draw near to you.

    Amen! First God!
