
In a recent article published in Time magazine titled “Israel is stuck on the lunatic highway,” those protesting against judicial reform are portrayed as heroes, who are fighting to prevent Israel from becoming a dictatorship. The doctors, mental health professionals, IDF reservists and others who are putting a complete halt to life in the Jewish state are painted as dedicated patriots struggling to preserve Israeli democracy. Sadly, Time is not the only Western publication to depict the judicial reform protests in this light.
The New York Times did an exclusive on Shikma Bressler, the face of the Israel protest movement, describing her as a brave, heroic scientist and mother of five, who is fighting against “the erosion of Israeli democracy” due to the fear it could “lead to a dictatorship.” In an op-ed by Times columnist Thomas Friedman, he stated: “Mr. President, this Israeli government needs another dose of your tough love.”
