Sadly, this characterization causes a great many people who would otherwise visit or immigrate to instead avoid the Jewish state. But, is Israel really such a dangerous place?
According to the Global Terrorism Index 2018 Report put together by the Institute for Economics and Peace, the answer is no, Israel’s not half so dangerous as some other countries that we typically regard as “safe.”
The Global Terrorism Index ranks nations by the rate of terrorist violence and its impact on the local economy. In the latest survey, Israel was ranked 41, an improvement (drop in ranking) of five places over the previous year. Still, any amount of terrorism has an impact, and the study suggested that Israel’s GDP would be 10 percent higher if there were no conflict at all.
The survey found an overall 27 percent global decline in terror-related deaths, with 94 countries registering fewer fatalities in 2018, while 46 countries reported worsening conditions.
