Israel Communications Minister Yoaz Hendel on Tuesday tweeted congratulations to Elon Musk on his acquisition of Twitter, a move that sent shockwaves through the media world.
Hendel describes himself as a liberal right-wing nationalist, what some might see as the local equivalent of the American “libertarian.”
Musk himself falls very much in that camp, and above all else is fiercely committed to free speech for all, including those who’s views don’t line up with the mainstream consensus.
Hendel said that Israel is looking forward to a new era in which Musk’s brand of free speech becomes the norm on Twitter. But he also hopes the Tesla and SpaceX founder can help curb growing antisemitism and incitement against Israel on social media.
Congrats to @elonmusk on reaching an agreement to acquire #Twitter. Looking forward to a new era of #FreeSpeech. Yet, no less importantly, we in Israel hope that we can also recognize and combat #antisemitism and the incitement to violence against Jews and the State of Israel on>
