A survey by the Central Bureau of Statistics found that 89 percent of residents who have lived in the settlements for at least 20 years feel more secure than those in other cities and towns in Israel. Despite of all the dangers in the territories, which the world regards as “occupied,” people there tend to feel safer than the inhabitants of Tel Aviv and other localities in Israel proper.
In Jerusalem, according to the same survey, 81 percent of residents also feel safe on the street at night. In Tel Aviv, Haifa, Ashdod, Netanya and Beersheba the figure is slightly less, 78 to 80 percent. The fact that Israelis in Jerusalem and the settlements feel more secure than people elsewhere in the country could be because of a deeper sense of purpose in living precisely where they do.
