That hope now appears lost. Not only is the US Embassy not moving from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, neither is construction activity in the Jewish settlements being revived following the freezes of the Obama era. Trump’s promises are now seen by some as nothing more than empty words to gain votes.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu made similar promises, and is now, along with Trump, facing mounting scorn.
“Contrary to what the prime minister promised, building activity in the Jewish settlements in Judea and Samaria remains frozen,”said Oded Ravivi, chairman of the local council in the large Jewish settlement of Efrat. “Netanyahu is playing for time. He has absolutely no intention of keeping his promise. All we hear from our government are excuses; they have promised the US government that they will not build any new Jewish homes in Judea and Samaria, including East Jerusalem, until the end of 2017. Although officially the Israeli government denies this, behind the scenes this is what has been decided, that Jewish building should be stopped.”
