Those who visit the editorial office of Israel Today in Jerusalem will get to know the famous King George Street.

Normally it is lined with cafés and shops. Since September 2025, however, construction has been underway on a new tram line here. Like the neighboring Jaffa Street, the renovated King George Street will also become a pedestrian zone.

The King of England could not have dreamed of this when he contributed to the creation of modern Israel approximately 100 years ago.

When thinking about the founding of the State of Israel, names like Theodor Herzl, Chaim Weizmann, or Arthur James Balfour usually come to mind. Yet King George V of Great Britain also played a remarkable, if often overlooked, role in this era. The monarch followed the fate of the Jewish people with genuine interest. During his reign from 1910 until his death in 1936, he made possible the decisive turning point for a Jewish state.
