When you’re woken in the middle of the night by a piercing alarm, it’s usually not a good sign. But here in Israel, it’s become almost as routine as morning coffee. Since regular advance warnings of possible missile attacks from Iran started, our daily routine has noticeably changed—or let’s say, expanded.

First came a message like: “There is a possibility of missile fire in the next 30 minutes. Stay near a shelter.” Sounds harmless enough, right? But even that threw our routine into disarray. Soon after, a second message: “Sirens may sound soon. Remain in immediate proximity to a shelter.” And then—sometimes half an hour later—the actual siren.

This led to some confusion. Do we sit in the shelter for 20 minutes before anything even happens? Or was it all just a false alarm? And then there’s that app sound from the Home Front Command—always the same, always shrill. Enough already.
