American Jewish billionaire Sheldon Adelson died on Tuesday at the age of 87, his wife Miri announced. Adelson was a major supporter of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and US President Donald Trump, and made large donations to the latter’s presidential campaign.

Adelson was also owner of the free daily newspaper Israel Hayom, which is the largest circulation newspaper in Israel and carries an overt pro-Netanyahu slant.

Netanyahu said he received the news of Adelson’s death with “deep sorrow and heartbreak.”

The prime minister’s statement read:

“Sheldon’s tremendous efforts to strengthen Israel’s position in the United States and to strengthen the connection between Israel and the Diaspora will be remembered for generations.

“Along with his wife Miri, Sheldon was one of the greatest contributors in history to the Jewish people, Zionism, settlements and the State of Israel.

“We will forever remember Sheldon and his tremendous contribution to the State of Israel and the Jewish people.”
