MembersPurim after the missile strike in Beit Shemesh – grief and artificial joy

We find ourselves in an emotionally schizophrenic situation, trying to fulfill the commandment of joy on Purim while a deadly war rages around us.

Over the past two years, Beit Shemesh had been spared the heaviest rocket attacks. The town lies in the hills of Judea, roughly midway between Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, and has no significant industry or symbolism that our enemies particularly like to target.

That changed abruptly yesterday when a direct hit destroyed a public shelter where people had fled after a missile alert. Several houses were also heavily damaged. Nine people were killed and many others seriously injured.

On the various social media channels in Beit Shemesh, people are talking about the incident, sharing pictures of those killed, and organizing prayer groups for the injured.

No joy on Purim
