Some of the Orthodox Jewish religious partners are seeking directions in Israel that are very troubling to Messianic Jews – like canceling the grandfather clause of the Law of Return in which, up until now the grandchildren of any Jew were eligible to find safe haven and live in Israel.
There is more. Another desire of the new coalition is to declare full sovereignty over the West Bank (Judea and Samaria). Some Christian Zionists cheer this on. But I think it is in the spirit of the first century Zealots who brought the wrath of Rome down upon Israel and destroyed Jerusalem. Does anyone remember that attaining the full borders promised in the Torah is contingent on Israel’s righteous behavior? Does anyone think that Israel is righteous enough to make the maximum claim?
Prime Minister Netanyahu in the past was quite careful and balanced in all this in my view, but I think he is now being pushed to embrace an extreme position in order to form a government.
