Azerbaijani security thwarted a planned terrorist attack on the Israeli Embassy in Baku. The incident occurred several months ago but has only now been made public— one day after the visit of Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar to Azerbaijan, where he led a large economic delegation.
The security services arrested three Azerbaijani citizens who, out of religious hostility, were preparing a terrorist attack on the Israeli Embassy in Baku. The three were apprehended as they approached the compound.
The arrested individuals are:
- Guliyev Ilgar Ilham oglu (born 2000), known as “Abu Zar al-Muhajir”
- Piriev Amin Alshad oglu (born 2005), known as “Abdurashid”
- Alizadeh Elvin Sanan oglu (born 2005), known as “Abdurrahman al-Azeri”
According to the State Security Service, the three maintained criminal contacts with members of the terrorist organization Islamic State Khorasan Province (IS-K). As a conspiratorial group, they procured items intended to serve as weapons for a terrorist attack on the embassy of a foreign state, and were arrested by security forces as they approached the embassy area.
The Azerbaijani security service initially referred generally to a “foreign embassy.” According to information from the news portal Ynet, it was the Israeli Embassy.
The three suspects are to be charged with preparing a terrorist attack motivated by religious hostility, carried out by an organized group using objects serving as weapons. A court has extended their pre-trial detention. The investigation is ongoing.
In recent years, Azerbaijani security services have repeatedly foiled terrorist attacks targeting the Israeli Embassy.
