Only a few months ago, Donald Trump was compared in Israel’s right-wing camp to the Persian king Cyrus. Rabbis, ministers, and commentators saw him as a statesman sent by history who, like Cyrus in ancient times, defended Israel’s interests and made historic decisions in favor of the Jewish state. Today, for many of his former admirers, that comparison sounds like a distant memory.
The emerging agreement between Washington and Tehran has triggered shock within Israel’s right-wing camp. Of all people, the president whom many celebrated as Israel’s closest ally is now accused of caving in to Iran and sacrificing Israel’s security interests. Some are already speaking of a historic mistake, others even of betrayal. Whether the final chapter of this story has already been written, no one currently knows. As long as no agreement has been signed, there is still room for surprises. Yet the mere fact that prominent supporters of Netanyahu and Trump are now openly speaking of disappointment, political bankruptcy, and a “knife in the back” shows how deep the shock runs in parts...
