Some new heroes have come to the fore within Palestinian society. This has emerged from a recent survey by Dr. Khalil Shikaki. Following on from the recent unrest in the Land, the Palestinian population appears to have realized who it is that can make a difference by stirring things up on the streets.

For the survey the Palestinian Center for Politics and Research asked the following questions among the Palestinians in Judea, Samaria and the Gaza Strip: In your opinion, who are the ten key figures in the latest escalation? Eighty-nine percent praised the Palestinian residents of East Jerusalem, who protested on the streets and confronted the Israeli security forces in supposed defense of the Al-Aqsa Mosque on the Temple Mount. In second place with 86 percent, the Israeli Arabs were extolled for their recent street violence. The Hamas leadership, who promote themselves as the guardians and defenders of Jerusalem, only managed to get in at third place (75%).
