Israel surveys Western and especially Arab media reactions to the stunning pager attacks on Lebanon’s Hezbollah.

Back-to-back days of pager and mobile device explosions left over 30 dead and thousands wounded in Lebanon, nearly all of them Hezbollah terrorists. In Israel, this was reported as a stunning intelligence and military achievement. But how was it portrayed by the mainstream international media, and what was the spin in the Arab world?

France 24 chose to lead with a quote by UN special coordinator for Lebanon Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, who said, “These developments mark an extremely concerning escalation in what is an already unacceptably volatile context.”  She urged “all concerned actors to refrain from any further action, or bellicose rhetoric, which could trigger a wider conflagration that nobody can afford.”

The French outlet also cited Hezbollah as saying, “We hold the Israeli enemy fully responsible for this criminal aggression,” adding that Israel “will certainly receive its just punishment for this sinful aggression.”

The BBC reported that UN Secretary General António Guterres warned of a “serious risk of dramatic escalation” and called on all parties to “exercise maximum restraint.”   Guterres added, “Obviously the logic of making all these...
