Likely incoming Speaker of the US House of Representatives, Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), says one of his first acts would be to remove Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) from the sensitive and powerful Foreign Affairs Committee.
The far-left progressive fringe of the Democratic Party was able to make a big splash during the Democrats’ long-held majority in the US House of Representatives, often to the chagrin of the party leadership.
Most notably, the junior lawmakers know as “The Squad,” of which Omar is a prominent member, promoted anti-Israel viewpoints and policy at odds with pro-Israel positions held by a majority of American voters, both Republicans and Democrats.
Fear of The Squad’s growing influence with younger voters resulted in some of those viewpoints influencing mainstream policy in recent years, leading to consternation in Jerusalem.
At least for the coming two years, until the next congressional election, McCarthy hopes to lessen the impact of The Squad.
Speaking over the weekend at the annual Republican Jewish Coalition conference in Las Vegas, McCarthy said of his intention to remove Omar from the Foreign Affair Committee:
“I remember what she said about me. I remember what she said about Israel. I remember what she said about the [US-Israel] relationship. I remembered it so much, I promised you last year she would no longer be on foreign affairs. I’m keeping that promise.”
Omar, along with fellow Squad members Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Rashida Tlaib, has pressed for aggressive oversight and conditioning of US aid to Israel, and openly supports the anti-Israel Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement.
She’s also dipped her toes in the waters of antisemitic libels.
In 2019, Omar tweeted that McCarthy’s support for Israel was “all about the Benjamins,” suggesting that he had been bribed by Israel and/or the Jews.
The squad is an insult to the American people, but, so has the party they belong to become over the last few years. If anyone is actually looking, they will see the same party has become an insult to long time American allies as well.
