VIDEO: South Tel Aviv and Israel’s Illegal Immigrant Problem

South Tel Aviv is a major point of contention in Israel today, owing largely to an influx of illegal immigrants

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu visited the southern district of Tel Aviv last week to reassure residents there that they haven’t been forgotten.

South Tel Aviv has in recent years transformed into something of a slum, and become a major political issue.

The source of the problem, at least as far as local residents are concerned, is the influx of over 18,000 illegal African immigrants over the past decade.

Israel doesn’t have the resources to effectively absorb non-Jewish immigrants in such numbers, but at the same time has difficulty turning away anyone truly in need given the tragic history of the Jewish people in exile.
