I grew up playing with Barbie, the stereotypical blond-haired, blue-eyed doll with long legs, tiny waist, and permanently pointed feet. She was beautiful, always made up, and could be anything she could dream of: Astronaut, flight attendant, fashion designer, nurse, athlete, veterinarian, Unicef ambassador, rock star, police officer, and even Presidential Candidate.
At some point, she was replaced with more mature entertainment, put away in a box, and forgotten. That is until nostalgia presented itself in the form of Greta Gerwig’s new Barbie movie, which came out this July and has already made a whopping billion dollars at the box office.
The promos looked delightful. Did I have the faintest clue what the movie was about? No. But it had stunning visuals, a super catchy Ken number, and a very charismatic Ryan Gosling, so I went to the theater with three girlfriends on its premiering night (“Wear something pink or Barbie-like!”).
