Corruption almost always begins inside the borders, in the heart of the community. It takes root wherever silence and false loyalty crowd out truth. Today, too, Israel faces such a moral test. In a country founded on justice and compassion, a tiny handful raise their hand against the innocent, and they do so in the name of faith and the “redemption of the land.” Though they are only a minuscule fringe, they damage Israel’s image even more than it is already damaged. Rioting in Palestinian villages must be condemned, and that is exactly what all my friends who live in the biblical heartland do. Unfortunately, the government does not. This is not an attack on the settlement movement; it is a call for accountability. For whoever fails to uphold justice in his own house forfeits the right to proclaim it to the world.
