Last Friday, Orthodox Christians in Jerusalem observed Good Friday with processions through the Old City, prayers along the Via Dolorosa, and moving moments in and around the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. The Orthodox churches calculate their holidays according to the Julian calendar, which is why the Easter dates differ from those of the Gregorian calendar commonly used in the West. This year, Orthodox Good Friday fell on April 10, while Easter is being celebrated today, on April 12.

Aliza Ashkenazi was in the Old City on Friday and captured these impressions. Her images show the diversity of Christian traditions in the Holy Land: processions carrying crosses, liturgical vestments from different churches, quiet prayers, and the dense crowds in the narrow alleyways of the Old City.

The photographs document moments from a day in which deep faith, centuries-old rituals, and the unique atmosphere of Jerusalem come together in a singular way.
