Despite Ceasefire Offer: Hezbollah Kills Israeli Officer in Southern Lebanon

Captain Eitan Shmuel Lemberg (21) from Mishmar HaShiv’a was killed in an anti-tank missile attack north of the Litani River — just one day after the United States had presented a new ceasefire initiative, which was immediately rejected by Hezbollah.

An Israeli tank officer was killed on Thursday afternoon in southern Lebanon. At around 4:00 p.m., a Hezbollah terrorist fired an anti-tank missile at an Israeli tank operating north of the Litani River. Captain Eitan Shmuel Lemberg (21) from Mishmar HaShiv’a was fatally struck in the attack. Lemberg served as a tank officer in the 75th Battalion of the 7th Armored Brigade of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF).

Netanyahu: “A Brave Commander”

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu extended his condolences to the family of the fallen soldier and paid tribute to his service.

“Our hearts ache over the death of tank officer Captain Eitan Shmuel Lemberg of blessed memory, who fell in battle in southern Lebanon,” Netanyahu stated. “Eitan was a brave commander who led his soldiers from the front line to protect Israel’s security. We will always remember his heroism and his sacrifice.”

Immediately following the attack, the IDF struck Hezbollah targets in the affected area from the air and with artillery. With the death of Lemberg, the number of Israeli soldiers killed since the Hamas massacre of October 7, 2023, rises to 953.

Ceasefire Proposed — and Immediately Rejected

The attack occurred just one day after a significant diplomatic development. The U.S. State Department had announced in the early hours of Thursday morning that Israel and Lebanon had in principle agreed to a new ceasefire framework following further Washington-mediated talks.

The proposed agreement called for a complete ceasefire, the withdrawal of all Hezbollah fighters from the area south of the Litani River, and the disarmament of the terrorist organization.

However, Hezbollah Secretary-General Naim Qassem publicly rejected the proposal that same morning. He described the demand for a withdrawal from southern Lebanon as “capitulation” and “defeat.” In doing so, the Iran-backed terrorist organization made clear that it is unwilling to accept the terms. Just hours later, Hezbollah attacked Israeli targets with drones.

Ambassador Leiter: “Iran Is Trying to Destroy Hope”

Israel’s Ambassador to the United States, Yechiel Leiter, stated that the agreement was based on a simple principle: Hezbollah must cease fire, withdraw from southern Lebanon, and surrender its weapons.

On the platform X, Leiter wrote that there had been “real hope at the negotiating table for a new chapter of security and peace.” But Hezbollah and its backers in Tehran were trying to destroy that hope.

“They must not be allowed to succeed,” Leiter declared. “Israel will defend its citizens. Lebanon deserves a future shaped by its elected government — and not by an Iran-backed terrorist organization.”
