Knesset member Zvi Sukkot during a session in the Israeli parliament in Jerusalem. His unilateral destruction of a Palestinian monument to terrorists has also sparked fierce criticism in Israel. Photo: Yonatan Sindel/Flash90
A monument that honors a terrorist and conveys to a new generation that the murder of Israelis represents heroism and “martyrdom” has nothing to do with legitimate memorial culture in my view. But that is precisely why the state should have acted — not a member of the Knesset wielding a sledgehammer. Zvi Sukkot had a point in the matter, but with his unilateral action and the exploitation of military protection, he crossed a line. And yet the subsequent reporting reveals a remarkable imbalance: everywhere we see the Israeli hammer, but it is asked surprisingly rarely what that hammer actually struck.
MK Tzvi Sukkot arrived at Madama and Burin near Yitzhar with a sledgehammer and destroyed monuments commemorating terrorists.
Sukkot said he acted after the defense establishment failed to remove them. The move drew criticism from across the political spectrum. pic.twitter.com/S9UonDcbd5
