(JNS) British Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband on Monday pledged to “reset” his country’s approach to what he called “the Netanyahu government”—prompting a leader of British Jewry to call him a left-wing “radical.”
Hamas’s “murderous attack on Oct. 7” and other forms of antisemitism “cannot justify the suffering the Netanyahu government has inflicted in Gaza and the West Bank. This suffering is a stain on the conscience of the world,” Miliband said at the annual Labour Party conference Monday in Liverpool.
Samuel Hayek, the chairman of JNF UK, one of the Britain’s most prominent pro-Israel charities, which was established in 1939, said Miliband’s vow was “credible, already happening and part of his agenda as a left-wing radical within Labour.”
Miliband, who also spoke at the Labour Friends of Palestine pavilion during the party conference, “is appealing to the radical base, the Muslim vote and to potential voters for the Green Party,” Hayek told JNS. “A centrist Labour leader would have reigned Miliband in, but British Prime Minister Andy Burnham is a populist who’s on board with Miliband’s radicalism.”
