A serious military accident in southern Lebanon claimed the life of an Israeli officer on Thursday. Three other soldiers were lightly injured. According to the Israeli military, a Humvee military vehicle rolled over during an operational mission in the area of the Litani River.
The soldier killed was Capt. Eliav Haim Tzapalamus, 21 years old, from Haifa. He served as an officer in the Combat Engineering Corps in the 603rd Battalion, subordinate to the 7th Armored Brigade. The unit operated under the 36th Division in southern Lebanon. As the Israeli news site Ynetnews reports, the accident occurred on Thursday afternoon during a military operation.
The three injured soldiers were taken to a hospital for medical treatment. Their families were informed about the incident. The Israeli military launched an investigation to clarify the exact circumstances of the accident. Further details about the course of the accident were not initially released.
On its official website, the military confirmed the death of the young officer. According to the statement, Tzapalamus was posthumously promoted from the rank of Lieutenant to Captain. The military expressed its condolences to the family and stated that it would continue to support the bereaved.

Haifa Mayor Yona Yahav reacted with dismay to the news. He paid tribute to Tzapalamus as a young soldier who had dedicated his life to the security of Israel. The officer belonged to a generation of young Israelis who, despite their personal dreams and plans for the future, bore a great responsibility for the security of the country, Yahav stated.
In addition to the fatal accident, Israeli media reported another incident in southern Lebanon on Thursday. Two soldiers were lightly injured in that incident. Initial findings suggest that improper handling of ammunition may have caused their injuries. These soldiers were also taken to a hospital for treatment.
The death of Tzapalamus is part of a series of fatal incidents during Israeli military operations in recent months. In September, two Israeli reservists were killed in the northern Gaza Strip when an Israeli military drone exploded. An initial investigation found that a technical or operational malfunction was responsible for the incident.
There had already been fatal accidents in southern Lebanon as well. In June, 32-year-old reservist Master Sgt. (res.) Basil Sweid from Peki’in died after a military fuel tanker overturned. Another soldier was moderately injured at the time.
Since the start of the war on October 7, 2023, 971 soldiers have been killed according to figures from the Israeli military.
