Everyone understands that a peace agreement between Israel and the Palestinians depends on the future status of Jerusalem.

But for years, all attempts at negotiations between Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas have been at an impasse. It’s something akin to complete radio silence with each side blaming the other.

 

In the Knesset (parliament), Netanyahu is accused of failing to set a diplomatic goal for the nation. Political opponents including Zionist Union leaders Isaac Herzog and Tzipi Livni, as well as Yesh Atid (There is a Future) head Yair Lapid, charge that Netanyahu generates fear in the public instead of inspiring hope. The opposition, mostly composed of leftist and centrist parties, preaches about sensational possibilities for peace that Israel cannot afford to miss.

 

Israel’s Channel 10 television reported on a secret memorandum of understanding between Abbas and the Zionist Union party. The document promises that any future Zionist Union-led government would hand over 96 percent of Judea and Samaria (the so-called “West Bank”) to the Palestinians.
