MembersANALYSIS: UN Got It All Wrong on Israeli Golan Heights

Local Druze tell Israel Today that hostile UN resolution does not reflect their true positions

Last week, the UN General Assembly voted in favor of a resolution demanding that Israel hand over the Golan Heights to the regime of Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad.

One hundred forty-seven nations supported the resolution, while nine voted against it, among them the United States and the United Kingdom. Another 65 nations abstained from voting, and that was a number significantly higher than what occurred with four other resolutions dealing with the Israeli-Palestinian conflict that passed on the same day.

Only Iranian media and official state-controlled Syrian news agencies reported on the vote, with the Assad-linked SANA news agency lying about the number of countries that abstained.

The resolution stated that the seizure of the Golan Heights in 1967 during the defensive war between Israel and Arab countries was illegal according to international law, and demanded that Israel “cease changing the architectural identity, demographic formation, institutional structure, and legal state of the occupied Syrian Golan, and to particularly cease building settlements.”
