More than a third of respondents admitted that they knew little or nothing about the Nazi scheme to wipe our European Jewry.
The Yad Vashem World Holocaust Remembrance Center in Jerusalem reacted to these results with alarm, and warned that antisemitic stereotypes remained deeply-rooted in European society. Isaac Herzog, head of the Jewish Agency, called antisemitism a “disease that needs to be tackled before it becomes a pandemic.”
The survey was commissioned by CNN and carried out by ComRes in September among a sampling of 7,000 citizens of various European nations. In France, one in five respondents in the 18-34 age group said they had never heard about the Holocaust. In Austria, 40 percent of adults said that they know very little about the Nazis’ “Final Solution.” In Poland, 32 percent of respondents said the same.
