The Jerusalem Institute of Justice (JIJ), a human rights organization addressing abuses both in Israel and the Palestinian Authority, has filed suit with the International Criminal Court in The Hague against Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas for committing serious crimes against his own people over the past four years. According to the complaint, Abbas’ security forces routinely torture political prisoners, 17 of whom have died in custody during the timeframe in question.
The court is being asked to open an investigation into the actions of the Abbas government based on testimonies recently provided to various human rights organizations. One of those organizations, Human Rights Watch, has published an exposé on how both Abbas’ Palestinian Authority and the Hamas regime in Gaza arbitrarily arrest political opponents and journalists, and then brutally abuse the detainees.
The JIJ wants the court to pay special attention to the last four years, June 2014 to April 2018, during which the Abbas regime is said to have overseen a severely underreported wave of oppression. It was in 2014 that the UN Human Rights Committee began collecting evidence...
