On Thursday, we commemorate Holocaust Remembrance Day in Israel. The whole world will remember the crimes of the National Socialists against the Jews – with the exception of a large part of the Arab world, which to this day at best does not recognize the Shoah (Holocaust), but in other cases denies, downplays or even falsifies it.
The denial of the Holocaust is widespread in the Arab world. It is not taught in schools or universities there. The reason for this lies in the Palestinian narrative that emerged after the Second World War, which states that the Jews started the war – and therefore cannot be victims. They claim the real victim is the Palestinian people, who lost their land, Palestine, as a result of the Shoah. Supporters of this narrative believe that the West made reparations out of pity for the Jews after the Holocaust – at the expense of the Palestinians. Many Palestinians and Arabs still think this way today.
