Recently, I was in Jerusalem with friends. We were talking about all sorts of things, and the conversation turned to God’s promises to Abraham. A real debate erupted among us over the promise in Genesis 15: “To your descendants I have given this land, from the brook of Egypt to the great river, the river Euphrates.” Could it be that we’re already living in a Greater Israel without realizing it?
What God promised Abraham in the “Covenant Between the Pieces” is one of the most mysterious statements in the Bible. This covenant contains a tremendous promise—geographically, nationally, historically, and spiritually. It is usually understood as a vision that has not yet been fulfilled. For decades, we’ve pondered the biblical borders of Israel but never voiced what we think. We were always overly cautious, telling ourselves that even fantasizing about a Greater Israel could ignite a war.
