The Israeli army on Wednesday morning reaffirmed its commitment to the U.S.-brokered ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, after it had been jeopardized the previous day by a deadly Hamas attack.
“Following a series of targeted strikes in which dozens of terror targets and terrorists were hit, the IDF has begun renewed enforcement of the agreement after its violation by the Hamas terror organization,” the military said in a statement.
As part of its retaliatory measures, the Israeli Air Force targeted more than 30 senior commanders from various terrorist organizations operating in Gaza. “The IDF will continue to uphold the ceasefire and will respond decisively to any violation of it,” the statement added.
During Tuesday’s clashes, IDF Master Sgt. (Res.) Yona Efraim Feldbaum was killed in southern Gaza. According to Israel’s Army Radio, his bulldozer was struck by enemy fire during an operation in Rafah. Rafah remains under IDF control under the terms of the ceasefire.
Shortly after the initial attack, anti-tank missiles were also fired at an armored IDF vehicle, though no further casualties were reported.
The office of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced Tuesday evening that, following a security briefing, he had instructed the army to “carry out forceful strikes in the Gaza Strip.”
U.S. President Donald Trump also expressed support for Israel’s response. Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, he said: “They killed an Israeli soldier, so the Israelis hit back – and that’s what they should do. When that happens, they must hit back.”
