COMMENTARY: Yeshua Vs. Checkpoints

There were in fact checkpoints in Israel in Jesus’ time. How did He instruct His followers to respond?

The following is one response to our question regarding what would Jesus do if standing before an Israeli checkpoint today. Others will be published later this week.

What would Yeshua say and do if he had to go through a checkpoint today? He would do exactly what he did when he had to through a Roman checkpoint 2,000 years ago.

Was Yeshua upset by this? Surely, nobody enjoys waiting. Furthermore, it’s a humiliating experience to be considered a potential treat when you are an honest citizen.

Here is what Yeshua said to his compatriots who were rightfully upset about checkpoints in their OWN homeland:

“I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven. For he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? And if you greet only your brothers, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same? You therefore must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.” (Matthew 5.44+)

Terror isn’t the answer to checkpoints since it creates, justifies and multiplies them. Checkpoints are, however, the lesser of two evils. They are made to prevent entry to the unlawful and the criminal.

Checkpoints aren’t anything new and they are everywhere, primarily at each country’s frontiers. Since the fall of mankind, the Earth has always been subject to checkpoints because man has become a threat to man. Man can’t be trusted anymore.

Checkpoints are unpleasant, but they still are a sign of civilization, order and security. Areas without checkpoints are dangerous and unpredictable. We can too often see what happens to a Jew that crosses an area having no checkpoint… he almost never returns alive.

But no matter what, there will always be people constituting an obstacle to Yeshua for political reasons, over checkpoints or Jerusalem. (Luke 9.53)

If Yeshua was with us today, he would still be an Israeli and would surely be an IDF soldier at a checkpoint (isn’t he the Lord of armies?), dispensing divine love to his comrades and outsiders alike. People would flock to his checkpoint to hear his wisdom. And his wisdom we can still access today in the Scriptures and through prayer.

We need to ready ourselves for the ultimate Checkpoint that is the day of His return. That will be The Checkpoint and nobody will enter the World to Come unless he/she has been cleansed by the blood of the Lamb. We better make sure that we will be judged worthy to access the New Earth (Revelation 21.1) and aren’t left behind. (Matthew 25.10–13, Revelation 22.15)
