But that’s no different than Republicans who rejected anything and everything Barack Obama did, simply because he did it. It’s the reason so many people in this part of the world scoff at Americans for being so religious with their politics. Love him or hate him, Trump dropped some neglected truths on the world during his recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. To be sure, they are bitter truths for Israel’s antagonists. But they’re truths nonetheless. And if there’s to be any chance of achieving a genuine peace, it must be built on a foundation of truth.
A Capital is a Capital
The first truth is the simplest. Like it or not, Jerusalem serves as Israel’s capital city. It is the location of the Knesset, the Prime Minister’s Office, and the place where visiting heads of state go. As Trump stated, “this is nothing more or less than a recognition of reality.” If truth is the basis for peace, then reality must be the basis for truth.
