Never conceived of God as being concerned with walking, or as being pro-hiking? Think again. In Genesis 13:17 the God of Israel commands Abraham: “Arise, walk through the land – in the length and breadth of it; for I will give it unto thee.”

Yearly, hundreds of Israeli young people (and a few tourists) follow Abraham’s example and hike over 1,000 km all the way through Israel on the Israel National Trail. Perhaps by the end of this article you may consider joining them, at least for a segment.

The Trail begins next to the border with Lebanon at the ruins of biblical Dan in the far north of the country. “From Dan to Beersheba” is the Bible’s way of saying from northern Israel all the way to southern Israel. The Trail gets to Beersheba and then continues even further south.

The Trail meanders through many of the most beautiful forest vistas of the north, past the Sea of Galilee, then up and down Mt....
