The Hamas terrorist movement fired thousands of rockets at Israel, igniting a fierce military conflict that lasted 11 days. However, Hamas leaders did not really want this war. Their purpose was first and foremost to show the Muslim world that they were defending Jerusalem.
The desire to start a war came from Iran, which had been waiting for an opportunity to take revenge on Israel for the Mossad’s activities against the Islamic Republic in recent years.
Hamas hoped that Israel would not respond strongly to its provocation in shooting rockets at Jerusalem. And as soon as the fighting escalated, they worked behind the scenes, mainly with the Egyptians, to demand a ceasefire and seek an end to the military conflict. At the same time, they did not shrink back from any means of pressure on Israel to stop the fighting.
