The European Union has earmarked 34.5 million euros ($42.7 million) for pre-planning and feasibility studies of a gas pipeline from Israel to Europe.

The route of the proposed pipeline runs from the Leviathan gas field off the coast of Israel via Cyprus, Crete and Italy. Whether such a project is feasible will only be decided in 2019. If approved, construction of the pipeline could begin as early as 2021, and would take an estimated four years.

The pipeline would enable Europe to lessen its dependency on Russian gas. But there are financial concerns. The savings on gas from Israel would need to be sufficient to cover the cost...
