In this week’s Torah portion “Noah,” the terrorist organization Hamas is mentioned twice, and the translation is actually quite appropriate, perhaps even prophetic.
The sixth chapter of Genesis reads:
Now the earth was corrupt in God’s sight and was full of violence. God saw how corrupt the earth had become, for all the people on earth had corrupted their ways. So God said to Noah, “I am going to put an end to all people, for the earth is filled with violence because of them. I am surely going to destroy both them and the earth.” (Genesis 6:11-13)
The context of these verses is also interesting because it tells us the reasons for The Flood. “Hamas” is something so terrible that God decided to destroy humanity because of it.
The name of the terrorist group Hamas translated from Arabic means enthusiasm, zeal or fighting spirit, and is also an acronym for Islamic Resistance Movement.
Since we in Israel do not believe in coincidences, this terrorist group has chosen a name that reflects its essence in Hebrew. Furthermore, the Bible warns us with this hint that Hamas is very, very evil. God is so disgusted with Hamas that He destroys the crowning glory of His creation to remove iniquity and corruption from the world.
This is how you have to see today’s Hamas. It is hateful to God and must be eliminated. Rarely has one seen with such clarity the enemy one is dealing with as we sadly did on October 7th in Israel.
