A disturbing image of an emaciated Palestinian toddler, which made waves worldwide on July 23, 2025, as supposed evidence of a “famine in Gaza,” proves to be misleading upon closer examination. The photograph was taken by Gaza-based photographer Ahmad Jihad Ibrahim al-Arini and distributed by the Turkish news agency Anadolu. It first appeared on the front page of the British Daily Express. Within hours, major media outlets such as CNN, The Guardian, The New York Times, and the BBC published the image, painting a picture of widespread hunger in the Gaza Strip.
