IDF soldiers shot at two armed men who crossed the border from Syria into Israeli territory on Sunday and approached the security fence area on the southern Golan Heights.

The soldiers were dispatched to the scene and opened fire in accordance with standard operating procedures.

The men were both shot in the lower parts of their bodies. The IDF treated one at the scene, but he succumbed to his injuries. The second infiltrator fled back into Syria.

No Israel Defense Forces personnel were injured.

The incident follows one on the evening of Jan. 4 when IDF spotters identified a number of individuals at military outposts on the Syrian side of the border in close proximity to an IDF unit operating in the area.

Israeli tanks fired warning shots. The suspicious individuals retreated into Syrian territory, the military said.

Israel and Syria are separated by a 50-mile-long, 155-square-mile buffer zone, which is monitored by the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF).
