Iran: We Can Build the Bomb … And Destroy New York

Reports that Iran has crossed the nuclear threshold are proliferating, even as Tehran maintains that it has no intention of doing so. Tehran held the world for fools, and fooled the world.

The Jewish Press Monday (August 1) quoted a senior Iranian official, Mohammad Eslami, the Vice President and Head of the Atomic Energy Organization in the government of President Ebrahim Raisi, as saying that “Iran has technical opportunities to create a nuclear bomb, however, such a program is not on the table.”

The Iranians had been upset, the news service said, when the International Atomic Energy Agency reported in June that Iran’s nuclear program had advanced significantly since Tehran signed the 2015 JPOA nuclear agreement.

On Sunday, a report by The Jerusalem Post cited a video the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) posted on its Telegram social media platform warning that Iran was capable of building nuclear warheads to mount on its Emad long-range missile, and that it would turn New York City into “hellish ruins” if any attacks was carried out against its nuclear facilities.

Writing in Time last week, a former Israeli prime minister, Ehud Barak, said that Iran has now reached the place where it can transform itself into a nuclear power, and that no surgical attack can stop it.

Israel has for years been contemplating ways of dealing with the mushrooming Iranian threat, but has had its hands largely tied by an international community – led by the United States – which has insisted on pursuing diplomatic channels to try contain the threat.

Now, after vowing repeatedly that it will never permit Iran to develop a nuclear bomb, Israel is languishing under an untested prime minister, Yair Lapid, and a caretaker government, while Tehran is crowing that it has achieved the means to make the bomb.

The situation is dire.  Months ago, already, Israeli historian and Ha’aretz columnist Benny Morris detailed the terrible extent of the quandary in which Israel now finds itself.

“The bottom line is simple and clear: Either Israel, to the best of its ability, using missiles and bombs, destroys Iran’s nuclear installations, or it will have to live with a nuclear Iran in the years to come. Unfortunately, those are the only options and there are no others. The United States, whose military capabilities are far greater than Israel’s, won’t do the work for us (or for itself or for the rest of the world).”

Morris believed it likely that Tehran would massively respond to any strike by Israel “by launching ballistic missiles and drones at Israel. It would also unleash a worldwide campaign of anti-Israeli and anti-Jewish terrorism, and unleash Hizb’Allah and its 150,000 rockets (and maybe even Hamas and Islamic Jihad’s rocket stockpiles from the Gaza Strip). This would mean an all-out war in the Middle East that would necessitate an Israeli ground offensive deep into Lebanon (and maybe into Gaza), and strikes against additional strategic installations and cities throughout Iran.”

Former Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu frequently warned the world – on global television networks and in addresses to the US Congress, that Iran was not pursuing the production of one nuclear bomb, but of many.  Nor was Iran constructing nuclear-capable long-range missiles in order to hit Israel, Israel has long been readily in reach of Iranian missiles, he said. Iran’s real targets were the US and Western Europe.

The United States has never appeared overly concerned about whether it might happen to Israel; it also seems incapable of imagining it happening to America.

And it appears, under President Joe Biden, increasingly unwilling to stop mollifying the mullahs.

How horrendously ironic it would be if the US which, despite Israel’s repeated entreaties, has led the appeasement effort enabling Iran to gain the nuclear threshold, were to find itself the victim of this most dreaded attack.

Some believe the danger to be very real.

Tweeted Israeli columnist and author Caroline Glick Monday: “Iran is threatening to nuke New York. We warned this would be the consequence of America’s refusal to confront Iran with any seriousness. We warned this would be the endstate of Obama-Biden’s nuclear appeasement. The progressives attacked us as warmongerers. They did this.”
