
Israel is struggling to figure out how its Jewish heritage and biblical morality can be incorporated in the national life of a democratic state, which, if successful, could prove to be a model for the rest of the world.
Here’s what we have learned so far.
It is wrong to think of Israel as a state in the modern sense of the word. Israel is “Am Yisrael,” the nation or people of Israel joined by our common spiritual history recorded in the Bible. The Jewish nation is to the state what the soul is to the body.
Am Yisrael is built upon our rich legacy of communal memory. It is our biblical history as a people, the children of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob (Israel), that has created a powerful bond, often subconscious, that makes us want to live together and find a way to make our shared heritage of spiritual and experiential wisdom effective in our modern and democratic state.

You have summed up a major problem facing not only Israel but the whole western world as well. Israel can be a light to the nations as prophesied in Isaiah 60:1-3 and the best hope for a troubled world. But she must retain her messianic hope. The west has lost its biblical roots and is in serious decline. The Church as the defender of western values needs to rediscover her Jewish roots and Messiah.
