
Yes, you read that headline correctly. Panama’s Foreign Ministry voted Israel as the most influential foreign power in the tiny Central America country, beating out more likely contenders like Spain and Mexico.
Israel’s honored position in Panama was highlighted during the Panama Positivo event, the most prestigious award ceremony in the country. Awards are given in 13 categories, including media, art, sports and the positive influence of foreign countries.
Israel is, indeed, very active in Panama. Among many other examples, the Jewish state initiated a cyber-tech conference for all of Latin America in Panama, has cooperated broadly in science and education, and has lended its celebrated agricultural expertise. Israel also contributes to various aid organizations via the local Jewish community in Panama.
