Polls show: After two years of war, the Israeli population increasingly desires an end to the fighting – but the conditions remain controversial.

Let’s be clear: after two years of war, the majority of the Israeli population wants an end. Naturally, there is debate over the terms and whether Hamas will truly be defeated and destroyed at the war’s end—or continue to exist. All recent polls point to the same conclusion: the majority is losing patience with the endless conflict in the Gaza Strip, even if it is strategically understandable. But wars are fought by people, and 24 months of war mark the longest in Israel’s modern history. All surveys clearly indicate that Israeli society wants the war to end. Constant air raid sirens, rocket attacks, and general uncertainty lead to exhaustion and a desire for normalcy. But for that, the enemy must also play along.

A recent poll by the daily Maariv showed that 53 percent of the population supports the Trump plan to end the Gaza war, while 17 percent oppose it. For the first time, there is also a majority among voters of the right-wing government coalition in favor of the US scheme: 41 percent...
