Israeli, Egyptian Ambassadors Bond Over Love for Israeli Singer
Concert tour organized to commemorate 70 years since Israel’s rebirth, but that doesn’t keep Egyptian away
A very special guest was spotted in the audience when the Israel Embassy to Argentina, the Jewish National Fund and the Buenos Aires Municipality organized a local tour for popular Israeli singer Idan Raichel.
Raichel's visit was about more than just entertaining local fans, however. He spent a good deal of time visiting some of the more impoverished neighborhoods in the Argentinian capital, and joined local music groups in special jam sessions.
But what really caught the media's attention occurred at Raichel's main performance in Buenos Aires with the appearance of his "#1 fan," none other than Egyptian Ambassador Amin Malika.
Malika and Raichel actually met years earlier, when the former was serving as Egypt's ambassador to Canada. Malika fell in love with Raichel's music the first time he heard it, and has been a fan every since, despite chilly relations between Israel and Egypt.
Malika accompanied Israel Ambassador to Argentina Ilan Stolman to the Raichel concert. Stolman said of the outing, "This is proof of the extent to which music unites us."
Stolman added that he and Malika would continue to strengthen their friendship and work to create cultural bridges between Israel and Egypt, even as they are posted half a world away from the conflicts of the Middle East.
